The Power of the Pause: A Morning Recap
August 2026
There are mornings that stay with you. Friday was one of them.
Walking into the room Friday morning felt warm and alive before a word was even spoken. There was this beautiful mix of familiar faces from our Flourish Networking community returning for that same sense of support, alongside new women stepping in a little tentatively before finding their feet and connecting. There was a real anticipation in the air, that quiet buzz of women from all different backgrounds and ages, ready to nurture and be nurtured.
We gathered at Ace Hotel Sydney for our Flourish Elevate & Restore Series Morning Edition brought to you by Art Pharmacy and Flourish Women’s Networking. An intimate breakfast. Small circles. A theme many of us know well but rarely make time to talk about or practice:
Rest.
And more specifically, why so many of us resist it, even when we know we need it.
The Brick room at Ace Hotel felt soft and considered, morning light pouring in through the windows, a few flickering candles and touches of flowers through the space. A wave of pink moved through the room as our wonderful moderators arrived, and the scent ofPureheart Alchemy mists drifted through the air courtesy of Izabella. Coffee, fresh fruit, pastries and yoghurt were laid out, and excited conversations started before anyone had even sat down, that particular kind of buzz where strangers become friends over a shared desire to connect and support each other.
The Power of the Pause
Our speaker for the morning was Rebecca Kaye, founder of Aio Wellness, who invited us to look a little more closely at the way we rest, and whether it is actually restoring us.
She opened with something simple and confronting: many of us have come to associate productivity with being busy. But without genuine rest, that pace eventually catches up with us. Exhaustion doesn't arrive all at once. It builds quietly, until we realise we've been running on empty for longer than we thought.
Rebecca spoke about Dr Libby Weaver's concept of the "Rushing Woman," that exhausted, ever moving state so many of us default to without noticing. When asked how we are, the answer is almost automatic: "busy," "stressed." Her point was that when we live in that state for long enough, the red zone becomes our baseline, and calm starts to feel unfamiliar. Her message was simple but landed deeply: we are human beings, not human doings. The pause isn't something we earn once everything on the list is done. It's part of the work of being human.
To close, she led us through the physiological sigh, a simple breathwork technique: a full inhale through the nose, a brief hold, a second short inhale, and a long, controlled exhale through the mouth for six to eight seconds. Something free, quick and available to us at any moment we need it.
Around the table
From there, the conversation moved to the tables, guided by theConscious Leadership Wisdom Deck.
One question in particular opened something up:
What is one type of rest you know would genuinely restore you, but you rarely give yourself permission to do?
What followed wasn't about finding the perfect answer. It was about noticing what came up when we gave ourselves permission to be honest.
Around each table, conversations moved through some familiar but rarely spoken truths.
Asking for help isn't weakness. Many women spoke about learning, often the hard way, that letting others in and drawing on the collective wisdom of the group was a strength, not a failure.
Protecting your peace. Boundaries came up again and again, not as something selfish, but as a form of self respect and self protection.
Rest is personal. What restores one woman can feel like a chore to another, gardening was one example that came up. Nature and small rituals around it were shared as genuinely restorative practices for many.
Notice your triggers. A few tables spoke about recognising the signals, big or small, that tell you it's time to pause, before you hit exhaustion.
Self compassion over self punishment. A recurring thread was letting go of the guilt attached to resting, saying no, or simply not getting to everything.
Don't be the expert. Letting go of control and allowing others to share the load came up as a small but powerful mantra.
Your personal boardroom. Choosing who gets a seat at the table when it comes to advice, energy and influence in your life.
Around the tables were founders, leaders, creatives, women navigating new chapters, and women simply looking for a little more space to breathe. Different stories, different seasons. Plenty of common ground.
What We Carry With Us
For Emilya, Flourish has always been about creating a room where women don't have to perform, achieve or explain themselves, just show up as they are. Mornings like this matter because they give women permission to pause together, in real life, surrounded by people who understand exactly why that pause is so hard to take. Her hope is simple: that every woman who walked out of that room carried a little more permission with her. Permission to rest before burnout, to ask for help, to protect her peace, and to remember that she is a human being first, not just a human doing.
Maybe that is what these mornings are really about: creating enough space to think, reflect and connect with other women who understand what it means to be balancing a lot.
Rest doesn't have to wait until everything else is done. It can be part of how we move through our lives, our work, and the way we lead.
So as you move into the rest of your week, a question to take with you:
What would change if rest became part of how you lead, rather than something you waited to earn?
Thank You
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday and showed up so openly. These mornings are made by the women in the room.
