When We Stop Performing and Start Belonging

August 2026
At our Melbourne Long Lunch last Friday, seventeen women sat down together at one long table at Hannah Street Hotel in Southbank. No stage, no agenda beyond a shared meal and a deck of cards. Partway through the afternoon, I drew a card from the Conscious Leadership Wisdom Deck with Daisy Richmond-Smith. The question it asked was simple and not simple at all: where am I now.

It set the tone for what followed, at our end of the table and every other end too.

Pace
Looking back over the last eighteen months, some things moved quickly and other things simply took time, longer than I would have chosen. Around the table, that same idea kept resurfacing in different words: good things take time, and pace is something worth protecting on purpose, not whatever's left over once everything else is done.

Faith and energy
There's a particular kind of clarity that only shows up in hindsight, looking back at a difficult stretch and recognising that things worked out with more ease than you expected while you were in it. That's close to faith, not in a fixed sense, but a working belief that setbacks are part of the process rather than proof against you. Further down the table, the same question showed up as energy: where is yours going, do you have some to spare, or are you the one who needs it back. Nobody had a tidy answer. What came through instead was the ongoing work of noticing which people and situations leave you fuller, and which ones quietly don't.

Growth and grounding
Growth showed up less like an arrow forward and more like tending something you can't fully control, deciding what to keep nurturing and what to let go of, while the ground itself keeps shifting underneath you. Finding your own footing came up here, along with the practice of watching for the patterns that keep repeating, the structures that are actually holding you up whether you notice them or not.

Recalibration, not transformation
If there was a word of the year in the conversation, it was vibration. Collective consciousness. The plain, unglamorous work of believing in yourself and acting like it, rather than waiting until you feel ready. Recalibration did the most work here, not transformation, which sounds enormous and a little frightening. Think one percent, not overhaul.

Belonging
Elsewhere at the table, the idea of business as an armour came up, along with the slow process of putting yourself back on your own list after years of focusing elsewhere. Learning to say no without over-explaining it. None of it got resolved so much as said out loud, which felt like the actual point.

Space, permission, and asking for help
So many deadlines, and somewhere in there, learning that it's allowed to say no, I need more time. Growth needs space, and space is complicated to protect, especially when everything around you says move faster. This connected to something else that came up more than once: most of us don't know how to ask for help, or feel guilty when we do. A few reflected on picking a personal boardroom, a small group of trusted people to go to on purpose, rather than by accident.

Letting go and looking forward
Naming what needs to be left behind, an attitude, a habit, rather than assuming it will fall away on its own. By the end, the question had shifted from where am I now to something closer to what's next. New things are coming, and it feels like time to expand the horizon rather than defend the one already in place.

Thank you to everyone who sat with us on Friday, and to Grace and Daisy for holding the day together. The full gallery is on its way.
